$1908: I was just seriously paid

Gene’s poetry collection AZALEAS & Other Edible Flowers releases in a little under a week! This poem originally printed as a Zine is the first poem in it.

It’s possible that some were imagining or hopeful that a bunch of bill collectors would come chasing after me or that I would waste all my time and energy fighting with them in an attempt to get them off my back and receive a just response. I think I am very fortunate that like 5-4 months out of the year I work a job that helps me stay mostly caught up on expenses, even ones that are not actually fair. This karmic factor helps free my energy resources for 1) actually thinking more logically about ‘just paying off my unjust collectors’ instead of wasting energy dealing with their incessant harassment so that 2) I can actually spend more time focusing on doing what I love: creating.

For 5 seconds of the end of this summer season (fall season begins the day my book releases, BTW), I actually thought about fighting back against big bad WATER & POWER just like in Tank Girl. Ka-BOOM-pow-pow-pow

I’m totally kidding. I was just going to print off the data and mail it to them with a long letter detailing my complaints without paying, and they were probably going to turn off my power, and I was going to be sitting in the dark, not losing my heart in the dark and falling in love. Lol

I’m not going to make any equivocal comparisons here because comparisons don’t seem to help a lot of people. People tend to find my comparisons unhelpful.

Fun fact: cigars were 5 cents in 1918. I saw this on a sign on First Ave. Tobacco has gotten so expensive to afford in Minneapolis that I am now back to smoking cigs like in 2016 because it is cheaper and I am making less.

In Tank Girl, they were off grid somewhere when they were stormed for stealing water and power from the utility companies, and I certainly am not doing either of those things, but at the gas station the other day as I was filling up my vehicle yet another time for my side hustle at my delivery position, I realized how in control of our access to money and resources that big corporations like gas and oil companies and Amazon and Google really are.
